New Facility Development Agreement Approved by the Town of Superior!

Superior approves agreement for 143,000-square-foot ice rink, making the town an 'epicenter of hockey'

A plan to more than quadruple the size of our popular hockey and skating facility -- including the addition of a second sheet of ice and multiple indoor turf fields -- got a major boost from the town Monday.  The Board of Trustees unanimously approved a development agreement that sets the stage for Superior to dedicate 10 acres of land it owns at the southeast corner of U.S. 36 and McCaslin Boulevard for the construction of a 143,000-square-foot permanent ice and sports center!!

Bantam B's Win Slap Shot Tournament in Dramatic Fashion

The Bison dominated play in Littleton…until the championship game.  They outscored their round robin and semifinal opponents 27-4, but the final game was an epic battle.  The toughest early game came against the Tri-City Storm.  They had speed and talent but Boulder neutralized both with clutch goaltending, owning the neutral zone, improved breakouts, and relentless checking.  The Bison prevailed 4-1.  If the Storm wanted a rematch, they got it by advancing to the finals versus Boulder.
In the championship game Tri-City took a 1-0 lead late in the first period.  The Bison tied it up in the second, only to fall behind again late in the period.  Boulder rallied in the third with two goals.  It was a lead they hoped to carry to the final buzzer, but the Storm wasn’t over.  They stunned the Bison when they pulled their goalie and scored on the 6 man rush in the final 90 seconds to force overtime.  Two extra periods came and went without a goal from either team.  The tournament winner would be determined by a shootout.  Boulder again fell behind early, missing their first shot and allowing the first two Tri-City shooters to score.  The Bison rallied again, winning the shootout 3-2 and celebrating the victory with whatever energy they had left and helmets, sticks and gloves went “yard-sale” across the ice.   Unfortunately Aidan Cepulis suffered a broken wrist in the first period of the championship game.  Aidan is tough as nails and we know he’ll be back soon.  We wish him a swift recovery.
Our boys earned this championship through hard work and commitment to team strategy.  Five players scored a point per game and thirteen players tallied multiple points.  That’s Bison hockey.  Sam Gartner provided outstanding goaltending and took home tournament MVP honors.  Congratulations on your well-deserved banner, Bantam Bs!

Squirt B Navy takes 2nd at Arvada MLK Tournament

Solid team play and stellar goaltending brought home the hardware at the Arvada MLK Squirt B Tournament.  The Bison took a 3-1 record into the semifinals against CHC, the only team to beat them in round robin play.  In the first matchup Boulder led 2-0 late in the game but let up and lost 3-2.  The rematch was a different story.  The Bison out-worked CHC for three periods and earned a spot in the finals with a 5-1 win.  The championship game was another rematch, this time against Glenwood Springs.  Boulder battled hard but couldn't match Glenwood's scoring punch, falling 5-2.  Despite the difficult loss the team proudly accepted the 2nd place trophy and they earned it.
Dominik Wasik tied for the most goaltenders wins (4) and shutouts (2) of the tournament.  Dawson Santangelo finished second in scoring with 9 points and Will Rosenblatt was right behind him in third with 8 points.  The whole team rallied around their leadership on and off the ice.  The team also appreciated Coach Cullaton keeping close tabs on their tournament performance and offering words of wisdom.  This team is really coming together with fantastic team hockey and learning how to work hard on every shift.  They're ready to take their momentum back to league play and on to Fargo next month.  Way to go Squirt B Navy!

Pee Wee B's deliver a strong Silver Sticks Performance!!!!

The Pee Wee B team just returned from the Pelham, Ontario Silver Sticks Tournament with a strong and dramatic weekend performance in representing the Bison organization north of the border. After a Thursday opening day loss to the eventual tournament finalist Orangeville (ONT) Flyers, the Bison found themselves with a two game slate on Friday that meant another loss would end their weekend early before the Saturday quarterfinals. It was here that the team found not only their resolve but seized the opportunity at hand. A Friday morning battle versus the Bay County (MI) Blizzard was a tough battle that saw our Bison score a game tying goal with 35 seconds left to stun the Blizzard and earn a 2-2 tie. Next on the schedule for Friday were the Cleveland Sharks in a must win game afternoon game. The team responded with a huge 4-3 win that lifted them into the Saturday Quarterfinals.

The Saturday morning meeting with the Fresno Monsters was once again a "win or go home" battle that found our Bison locked into a 1-1 tie entering the last minutes of the game. Once again our Pee Wee B teams flair for the dramatics came roaring through as the Bison knocked in the game winning goal with just over 2 minutes left in regulation to earn a nail biting 2-1 victory over the Monsters!!!

Waking up on Sunday morning the Bison found themselves with a date in the tournament semi-finals and were one of only 8 teams out of the original 20 still playing on this frosty morning. A hard fought battle with the Chicago Bruins awaited and the game once again did not disappoint. The final result however saw the Bruins knock off the Bison by a 4-3 score in a game that brought out the best in both teams. All in all a great weekend performance by our players and coaches and an experience that no one on the trip will soon forget. Congratulations Coach Kelly and players for a job well done on youth hockeys biggest stage!!!!!

Brad Shumway, Former BHC Player Commits to RIT

Congratulations are in order for our Brad Shumway who committed to playing college hockey at the RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology), a Division I school in the Atlantic Hockey Association.   Brad currently is a defenseman and Team Captain for the Wichita Falls Wildcats in the North American Hockey League (NAHL).  Brad, a native of Colorado is the son of Bob and Karla Shumway.  Brad played for the Bison as a bantam and midget. He played on the Bison's U-18 at the age of 15. The team won State, Regionals and finished 5th in the Country at Nationals in 2008. Bison Hockey Director Matt Huckins coached Brad as a bantam and as a midget and had this to say. "Brad has great hockey sense, he has always been able to skate the puck. Brad quietly makes every team at the next level. His character and emotional control are a big reason why. Brad was an impact player for us the year we went to Nationals. Its great to see him wear the C at Wichita, he always leads by example, congrats Brad!"

BHC is pleased to announce the following for the 2011-2012 season:

Cully Named 8 & Under Program Director
Assistant Hockey Director Brent Cullaton will take a new role within BHC this year. Coach Cullaton will head the 8 & Under Program as our U8 Hockey Director. Coach Cullaton will work closely with USA Hockey’s ADM Director Joe Doyle to enhance the Bison ADM Program for the 2011-2012 season. Brent will continue to be the Head Coach of the Junior Bison and will also continue to assist in the B.E.S.T Program on Monday evenings.

Locks Returns to Boulder
Former Boulder Hockey Club skills coach and BVICE manager Chris Lockrem will return to the Bison after seven years as Director of Hockey Operations at Aspen Youth Hockey. Chris will be the Head Coach for BHC Squirt A team this season and he will assist with the B.E.S.T Program on Monday nights as a skills coach. Chris has also taken a managerial position at the BVICE facility. Coach Lockrem is a former AAA and college hockey player and he has coached from mites to college hockey over the past 12 years. BHC is very excited to have Coach Lockrem back in the Bison program!

BHC Partners with MBS Crossfit for Off-Ice Training
We are very excited to announce a new partnership with MBS Crossfit (www.mbscrossfit.com). Under the agreement, MBS Crossfit will provide certified Crossfit trainers required to handle all of the off-ice training for BHC teams from Squirts to Midgets.
What is Crossfit? In short, it is the most intense, full body workout available today. It is a strength and conditioning brand that combines weightlifting, sprinting, and gymnastics, powerlifting, kettlebell training, plyometrics, rowing, and medicine ball training. CrossFit contends that a healthy, fit person requires proficiency in each of ten general physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy. It defines fitness as increased work capacity across all these domains and says its program achieves this by provoking neurologic and hormonal adaptations across all metabolic pathways.

Eighteen year NHL veteran Scott Thornton started Crossfit in 2006 and recently opened his own Crossfit gym in Collingwood, Ontario. He says, “I should have been doing this 15 years ago. It’s a super match; it’s perfect for hockey”. See the full article here:

In addition, we are completely renovating the BVICE dry land area and creating a serious Crossfit gym. The Crossfit gym will be complete with pull-up bars, climbing ropes, Olympic bars and weights, squat racks, benches and more. We can safely say that BHC players will be the best conditioned athletes in the state!

B.E.S.T. (Boulder Elite Skills Training) Program Enhancements
BHC will continue its B.E.S.T Program on Monday nights during the 2011-2012 season. We will be adding content to the on-ice sessions, including power play, penalty kill, D-zone and O-zone tactics. BHC is also requiring its coaching staff to make a commitment to attend at least 75% of the skills sessions to improve their coaching capabilities as well. This will give our directors a chance to work with all of our coaches to improve their coaching capabilities. Our number one focus will still be developing individual skills on Monday evenings.

Bison MITE Skills Night Wednesdays
The Bison 8 & Under Program(mites) will continue using the ADM model. Brent Cullaton and the Bison 8 & Under Staff will run up-tempo skills sessions on Wednesday nights for all mites.

New Home and Away Socks
All players, Squirt-Midget will need to purchase a pair of home and away socks form Pro-Skate. The socks are similar to the Jr Bison socks. They are made of a nylon material so they wear much better and show less signs of use. Squirt-Midgets are also required to have a pair of Bison breezer covers. All jerseys and apparel are available at Pro-Skate.

Tryouts and Coaches
All goaltenders must attend the goalie sessions on Friday, August 19th. The tryout schedule is posted on the website under “Ice Schedule”, above in the menu bar. There will be a charge of $50.00 for Bantam and Peewee AA tryouts, payable at check-in. The tryouts are for legitimate AA candidates only. If the coaching staff does not feel you have the ability to compete for a spot at AA, you will be released after the first session. Players released after the first session will receive a $25.00 refund.
The Bison have named the AA and Squirt A level coaches for the 2011-12 season. As tryouts get started we will name the Travel Rec. coaches.  We have a great group of coaches to select from this year. Below is a list of coaches for the Peewee and Bantam divisions:

BHC Announces No Midget Major Hockey Teams This Season

Why No Major Hockey at BHC?

Last season CAHA changed the schedule for Midget Major youth hockey to support CHSAA high school hockey, which is prevalent in the Denver metro area and south.  The season was shortened to about three months.  In addition to CHSAA hockey, Midget Major players have the option of playing in the DNHL, High Plains Hockey League or for the Boulder Junior Bison.

Over the last two seasons BHC has moved 36 Midget players to AAA, prep school and junior hockey.  Since 2009, our top Midget Major players have played for the Boulder Junior Bison team. Boulder Hockey Club is very proud of its ability to move players to the next level.

Based on all of these options, we projected a very small returning group of 1993-1994 birth year players.  In addition, we find it very difficult finding quality coaches who will take a team for only a three month period.  These are the reasons we cannot field Midget Major teams for the 2011-2012 season.

Each season we review our projected returning players at every level in order to plan our teams for the next season.  Midget Major teams may return to BHC next season and thereafter depending on the number of returning players for that season.

Matt Huckins will assist all 1993 and 1994 birth year players in finding a place to play youth hockey this season.  Please feel free to contact him to discuss and thank you for your support.

BHC Announces FREE Ice Fee Program

In an effort to make hockey more affordable for our members, today BHC is announcing a program where BHC families can earn ice fee credits to lower or eliminate their ice fees for the 2010-11 season.  The program allows BHC families to sell various sponsorships such as dasher board ads, banner ads and Zamboni ads within BVICE.  BHC members who attract an advertiser(s) will receive 50% of the initial year's advertising revenue as credit toward their ice fees for the 2010-11 season.  As an example, a member selling two dasher board ads would cover 100% of their ice fees for the season.

We have developed a full-color brochure that details all of the sponsorship opportunities and pricing.  The brochures are available at BVICE.  In order to qualify for this program, your player must be registered for BHC by August 9th, you must maintain good financial standing with BHC and you must execute the Consulting Agreement Document found at this link.  You can drop-off the signed agreement at the BVICE front desk.

We are constantly searching for ways to help our valued members.  We are confident this program will assist many BHC families with their ice fees this season.  Please direct any questions to Dennis Hefter at dennis.hefter@comcast.net.
