Make room for Championship Banner number 4 for the 2009-2010 Minor A team. They crowned a superb year winning the CAHA State Championship with a gritty 2-1 overtime win over Arvada in front of an excited crowd at the Pepsi Center.
For the fourth game in a row, Max Szilagyi scored the first goal of the game converting his own rebound just 3:23 into the first period, with assists to Ryan Gullet and Joey Hillam. Boulder threatened repeatedly and dominated play through much of the rest of the first period, until a second Boulder goal was waived off as the referee inexplicably lost sight of the puck. Play resumed tight and tense, until an unforced turnover and bodies knocked into Boulder goalie Zach McCallum resulted in Arvada scoring with but seven seconds remaining in the first period. It would prove to be the only goal allowed by Zach during the two State playoff games.
The remainder of regulation saw Boulder faced with continuing adversity as it played nearly a full period a man down, expending tremendous energy to thwart time and again the Arvada power play. While each side created some excellent scoring chances, including a breakaway by Arvada's, and the CCYHL's, leading scorer, neither goalie yielded and neither team could notch the go ahead goal.
But at 8:53 of the overtime, or after 53:53 of hard fought hockey, Connor Watkins capped a beautifully executed three-on-one breakout and attack with Max Legere and Alex Black, and capped a tremendous season, with the tournament winning goal in another scramble by the Arvada net. After what seemed like an eternity, the referee's arm pointed to the net, signifying the State Championship belonged to the boys from Boulder.
For the State Playoffs, Max Szilagyi and Connor Watkins with three goal apiece were tied for tournament leader in point, goals and game winners. Zach McCallum was the tournament's leading goaltender, with an incredible 0.50 goals against average. Ryan Gullet tied for tournament assists leader with two. Alex Black, Joey Hillam, Max Legere, Dan Morrison, Grayden Roper and Cole Uhland all recorded assists. Each and every player contested and won countless battles for the puck, for the line and for this championship.
Coach Gudhal was quick to point out "the total team effort that led to the win in this game, just as it has all season." And so this successful 32-9-2 season ends with the goal of the CAHA State Championship realized; a goal carved in the ice after last year's season ending playoff defeat. As Gary Hillam put it," it is just very hard to put out that kind of goal and realize in any sport, let alone hockey."
Congratulations to these young men; may they enjoy savoring this championship season for their lifetimes.
