About Boulder Bison Hockey

Welcome to Boulder Hockey Club

The Boulder Hockey Club (BHC) was founded in 1970 as a not-for-profit organization.

Program Philosophy

Boulder Hockey Club is dedicated to providing Boulder area youth with a positive atmosphere that supports a fair and competitive environment. Ice hockey is used as the vehicle to promote sportsmanship, integrity, self-esteem, dedication and commitment as a foundation for growth, both as an individual and as a member of the community.

Emphasis will always be placed upon family, education, personal development, community, diversity, teamwork and sportsmanship. The proper and positive conduct of board members, coaches, volunteers, players and parents will be maintained to ensure a positive culture and a dignified organization of which we can all be proud.

Above all … it’s all about the kids.

Required Basic Skills

Beyond the Mite division, players are expected to have some previous hockey experience and fundamental skating and stick handling skills. Mites must know how to skate before joining a BHC team. Local rinks like Boulder Valley Ice at Superior, 303-494-4777 and the CU Rec Center, 303-492-6561, and the YMCA of Boulder Valley 303-664-5455 offer beginner Learn to Skate classes.

Coaching

All BHC coaches must meet the criteria set by the BHC Coaching Committee and agree to follow the Coaching Code of Conduct as set forth by CAHA and USA Hockey. Coaches must have coaching experience and the appropriate level of USA Hockey certification in order to coach BHC teams.

Home Ice Rink

BHC's home ice is the new Boulder Valley Ice at Superior rink. Additional ice time is purchased from the Colorado University Recreation Center on the CU Boulder Campus.

Season Length / Practices

The season runs from early September through early March with registration beginning in the spring and the first team try-outs in late August. Games or practices are on Saturday and Sunday with additional practice time scheduled during the week. Most teams average 3-4 times a week on ice plus off-ice, "dry-land" training. Top level teams in each division are provided additional on-and off-ice practice times.

Games and Tournaments

As a member of the Colorado Competitive Youth Hockey League (CCYHL), BHC teams play a schedule of games against teams from the Denver, Ft Collins, and Colorado Springs area. Most BHC teams also attend local and out-of-state tournaments each year.

Costs

BHC has a registration or membership fee to cover all common expenses. A separate ice fee is charged to cover ice rental costs. Most teams collect money for various costs associated with team tournaments and other team costs. Teams manage their own costs for traveling to tournaments.
